JAZZ ALBUM OF THE YEAR (SOLO)

JUNO AWARD GOES TO: RECORDING ARTIST

ELIGIBILITY

This category includes all artists with a project that is either recorded completely solo, or with any amount of accompaniment but credited by name to one individual as leader as billed on the album packaging. Promotional material may be consulted.

A tribute project or concept album (as long as all the masters are used from new/recent recording sessions) spearheaded by one leader would also be applicable in this category.  In addition, solo artist-based projects where multiple instrumentalists are used to support the production of a singular project (i.e. a songbook or tribute project to the compositions of a particular artist or singer as long as all the masters are used or from new/recent recording sessions), shall be deemed eligible. ‘Various artist’ compilations (new or old) where numerous masters are compiled into a single album, are not considered artist-based projects and will not be eligible.

If there is any confusion on this issue, (i.e. a project that bills itself as both a solo artist and group within these definitions) CARAS will have sole discretion in determining the appropriate category for the project.

Eligible genres of music include:

Any style of recording that predominantly features musical elements from the rich and diverse history of jazz music.  Sub-genres or styles include: traditional jazz, stride, ragtime, swing, bebop, hard bop, cool jazz, modal jazz, fusion, Latin, Cuban or Afro-Cuban jazz, groove-based, nu-jazz, ‘acid jazz’, smooth, avant-garde, free improvisation, third stream, orchestral, world music-influenced, etc

Submissions may have guest vocalists but 80% or more of the material on the album must contain ‘instrumental’ recordings. Vocalists who sing as a section member with the group (i.e. without lyrics, vocal melodies in unison or in harmony with the instrumental members of the group) are not considered to be contributing towards a vocal jazz percentage of content. For example, a vocalist singing melodic, non-lyrical material within an instrumental project, is considered an instrumental contribution.

Live recordings that have a ratio of 75% (or less) previously released material and 25% new material are eligible.

There are no sales qualifications for this category.

Final decisions on category eligibility is at the discretion of CARAS.

A tribute project or concept album (as long as all the masters used are from new/recent recording sessions) spearheaded by a group or collective of musicians would also be applicable in this category. In addition, group-based projects where multiple instrumentalists are used to support the production of a singular project (i.e. a songbook or tribute project to the compositions of a particular artist or singer as long as all the masters are used or from new/recent recording sessions), shall be deemed eligible. ‘Various artist’ compilations where numerous masters are compiled (new or old) into a single album, are not considered artist-based projects and will not be eligible.
